Absolutely excellent idea - especially for the provisional price quoted as current insurance is much higher than this i believe.

The system works well in other colleges, we should definitely give it a go.

Would it be possible to have a tiered system? A lot of students will probably want to insure their laptop separately as a more expensive item, and I'm assuming it would be cheaper to do this as a group.

According to what I have been told the £5 is basic cover. For more expensive items you can get optional additional coverage through the same insurer. It is fairly easy and can be done online for all students. I am not sure about whether the additional insurance would be lower than the market rates for say insuring a laptop separately. Apologies for the lack of information coming through, we have just started looking into this and hopefully will have more information in the coming weeks.

Brilliant idea. I paid over £100 to get all my stuff covered in my first year then decided not to bother this year due to the cost, leaving myself at risk.

My only concern would be over the actual running of the system. Who would deal with claims? And how would people know what is covered and what is not e.g. bikes?

Selfishly, I'd be happy not to, since our home insurance already covers my stuff here. (So I voted 'no' for that reason.) More pragmatically, though, I think this is a great idea.

IMPORTANT: Let me just clarify. When I say compulsory I mean that IF the system is implemented students will not be able to opt out of the basic charge. The decision to institute the system is that of the JCR and the JCR only. This poll is here to gauge whether students would feel comfortable paying a basic charge of around £5 for the insurance (per year). If there is overwhelming support in favour of the idea, the system will be implemented, otherwise it will not be.

I think it's a good idea provided it does not come into effect immediately seen as many people will have already paid for a year's insurance. In the future it would be much cheaper than buying it yourself.

Sounds like a great idea, but presumably will be limited to college residences (or even just main site) so perhaps should only be compulsory for those living in college accomodation (this doesn't include most 4th years who are still members of the JCR but live off-site.)

Excellent idea. My insurance costs about £65 for a year...do we know how much the basic £5 package would cover us for? I usually insure my bike, computer, electronic stuff and nothing else.

Almost everyone's family will have house insurance and almost all these policies cover student accommodations as well. It's a completely unnecessary expense to most people and seeing as the college is already making us pay for a lot of things on top of our bill I don't want to have to pay more, especially if I'm gonna have to get additional insurance to cover "more expensive" items which will almost definitely include laptops/cameras which most students will have.

i have a few questions.

  • would the insurance cover accidents, such as drunk people trying to undress you in the bar and breaking your glasses in the process? or would it just cover theft?
  • who's the company that would be supplying the insurance? where does the £5 price come from?
  • why is it not possible to have an opt-out? surely all that's needed is to keep track of who doesn't want it, then take that number off of the totals? if queens' admin can't be fucked with the bureaucracy i'm happy to write them a program myself to take care of it.

I can't really see the point of this if it doesn't cover more expensive items such as cameras and laptops, who wants to pay £5 a term so they can fill in a form to claim back the cost of stolen pencils? In my opinion insurance should be bought for those items that you cant afford to lose, otherwise you're most likely paying for people to push bits of paper / webpages in front of you. How much is paid and claimed back by the other colleges that use this?
