There are loads of different people within Queens’ whose job it is to look out for students’ welfare. Here’s a list of just a few of them…
* Your tutor – You can go to your tutor with any problems, personal or academic. They are also the person who will help you if you decide you wish to degrade, if you get into serious financial difficulty, or if you wish to apply for excess residence or a bursary for vacation work or travel. Each tutor has a set drop-in time, that can be found on the Queens' website here: http://www.queens.cam.ac.uk/student-information/tutorial-information/tut.... You may also contact any other tutor if yours is unavailable, or if you would just prefer to talk to someone else. If you can't find a tutor in an emergency, the porters will be able to get hold of one for you.
* The Senior Tutor, James Kelly – Senior Tutor
James Kelly is available to help you with any of the issues that you might see you regular tutor for, and is useful if you find that you don’t get along with your tutor. He is available in Essex 8, Monday 0900-1100 or by appointment (email: jwk23@cam.ac.uk).
* The Dean of College, Martin Dixon - Martin Dixon is responsible for discipline within the college, as well as for giving permission for parties and some other room bookings. Dr Dixon can be emailed at mjd1001@cam.ac.uk.
* The Porters – The Porters are much, much more than the receptionists of college. They are an invaluable source of help for students on everything from punt bookings and post to advice and a friendly face no matter what time of day or night. They are also a fountain of knowledge about pretty much everything you could possibly want to know about Queens’. The Porters can be called on 01223 335500, or emailed at qplodge@queens.cam.ac.uk
* The Nurse, Mairi Hurrell – Sister Hurrell (sister in the nurse sense, she’s not a nun!) can be found in her surgery by the bottom of CC staircase in her office hours during the day (these are printed by the door), or the porters are able to contact her by phone at any time of day or night. She is such a lovely person to chat to, and an invaluable source of help for anything medical or emotional, don’t think you have to have to be dying to go and see her! She will also make room visits if you are too ill to go to the surgery, just call the porters and ask! (All contact details can be found HERE)
The nurse can be emailed at mh331@cam.ac.uk or telephoned on 01223 335578
* Womens’ officer, Women's Officer – Lucy is here to offer help, advice and support to all the women of college. You can contact her about anything at all, it doesn’t have to affect just women! She, like the LBGT and Welfare Officer, also has free condoms and other sexual health supplies, as well as cheap personal alarms. The college has a zero tolerance policy of discrimination of any sort, so if you feel you are being discriminated against on grounds of gender, do get in touch with Lucy. You can see her page Women at Queens'.
* LBGT officer, LBGT – LBGT stands for lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender, and Emily is here to offer advice and support for anyone who considers themselves to fall into any of these categories. Emily also organises LBGT social events, and, like the rest of the welfare team, has free supplies of condoms and other sexual health supplies. You can see Emily’s page LBGT life at Queens'.
* Academic Affairs and access officer, Academic Affairs – James is your point of contact for any issues or worries you might have about any aspect of academic life in Cambridge. He is also responsible for access, so prospective students feel free to get in touch with him with any queries about admissions. James’s page is Access Information.
* Welfare officer, Me! (Welfare) – My job is, pretty much as the title suggests, to look out for the welfare of all Queens’ students. I help to coordinate the JCR welfare committee (see above) and work with all the staff listed on this page to make things better for you. You can contact me at any time (all my contact details are below) to chat about pretty much anything! I also sit on the Domus committee (housekeeping) the safety committee, and the donations committee. So if you have any problems with your accommodation, or you want advice about making an appeal to the college for a donation to charity, I’m your girl!
