Freshers

The pages on the Freshers' section of the website are all based on the content of the Rough Guide to Queens' brocheure that you should receive shortly before arriving.

Welcome

Welcome to Queens’! And well done on getting in here – no mean feat! We are all excited about the coming year and looking forward to meeting you in October. We hope that you’ll soon come to realise that Queens’ is a fantastic place to live, socialise and study - there is such a diverse bunch of people here that there will be something for everyone to get stuck into around College!

You may or may not be feeling nervous about coming here; in either case, you won’t be able to avoid meeting like-minded people and forming some lasting friendships (sometimes with the most unlikely of people – take it from me!). Everyone coming here will have a different background and perspective, and it is this variety which is the beauty of life at Queens’, and indeed the entire University.

No doubt you’ll have by now received a seemingly endless and bewildering array of forms, letters and instructions from ‘College authorities’. These pages are designed as a more light-hearted take on the College so you can get an idea of life here from a student’s perspective. That said, there is some very useful information tucked away in here, and we hope that you will be able to make use of the JCR website throughout your entire time at Queens' rather than just in freshers’ week!

For now, let me wish you all the best during your time at Queens’, and I look forward to getting to know you in Michaelmas.

What to expect

The term Freshers’ ‘week’ does not apply as much as it does in other Universities for two reasons, first it is not a week long and secondly you do have to get used to the academic side of things before it all gets underway, meaning some of the time will be spent meeting all the people responsible for you during your time at Cambridge. HOWEVER, this does not mean that you will not have an awesome time, and it also means that people come to pretty much all the activities planned before term time starts.

Freshers’ week is the best time to get to know college folk before term begins, so although not much is really ‘obligatory’ it is the perfect way to get to know the other individuals you will come into contact with on a daily basis and form those vital first friendships.
