Not long after arriving at Queens’ you’ll realise that there is actually a lot outside these walls. Cambridge comprises 31 independent colleges each providing services and facilities similar to Queens’ – except each with their own flair! Like Queens’, every college has a JCR to tackle any problems at college level however when dealing with issues concerning the university as a whole or specific departments, it is better done with as many students behind you as possible – not restricting yourself to Queens’.
For this reason there exists CUSU – Cambridge University Student Union – which is there to ensure you get the most out of Cambridge. From providing confidential, non-judgemental welfare support to entertainment nights at local venues; CUSU campaigns for a positive change in Cambridge and over the years has moulded it into what we see today.
In order for all students’ views to be felt, each college has an external officer (in your case me) to represent its students. We and the JCR presidents attend CUSU council fortnightly where CUSU policy is determined and referendums are voted on – anyone can submit motions (and this is me hinting!). We also have the chance to discuss any problems Queens’ is experiencing or indeed assist other colleges in their query. Occasionally when a big vote is coming up I will place a poll on the QJCR website to get an idea of how the majority feel.
Queens’ blew me away when I got here but the journey does not end there: whether it’s sending me an email with something you would like raised or an autonomous campaign – get involved!
