BATS Late Show Opportunity

BATS are looking for two late shows to be put on next term during weeks 4 and 7. We are looking for interesting plays with run times around an hour. We do not mind if you have not directed a play before, we can give you lots of help putting it on, showing you what you need to make sure happens.

The plays can be serious or fun, modern or old, we don't mind as long as you can show that it deserves to be put on.

Email (Ellie, eja45 or James, jag84) for more details.

QFilms - Airplaine!

Thursday 3rd December - 8pm - Fitzpat

Leslie Nielsen brings a touch of silliness to the Fitzpat big screen for our end of term showing. One of the first spoof movies, Airplane! sets out to satire the disaster films of the 1970s – but with more of a theme than a plot, don’t expect too much brain-ache.  An incredibly funny movie, you will be laughing from start to finish.

Queens' RAG Naked Calendar

Nearly all of the photos have now been taken and the calendar is set to be an amusing memoir of our college days! We will be selling them £10 each before the end of term and they will be ready for collection at the start of next term. We will be in the buttery at dinner time this week so please remember to bring cash with you.

I'd just like to thank all of the societies who have kindly volunteered to take their kit off in the name of charity and to those who have seen more than they bargained for when helping with production!

Queens' Hockey End of Year Party

This Friday (4th) Queens' Hockey Club has two matches to round off the term. First the Mixed Team will play their second round Cuppers match against Fitz (10.30am), then the Men's Team will play their final league match of the season against Caius (12pm). This term, Queens' Hockey has gone from strength to strength, and has played some very exciting and attacking hockey. After the men's match (1.30pm finish), we will all be going for a celebratory pub lunch.

If anybody would like to come and watch either or both matches, and/or join us at the pub afterwards, you would be more than welcome. The matches are both on the corner of Wilberforce Road and Adams Road, next to the athletics track, which isn't far from Queens' at all.

If you have any questions, please contact Mixed Captain Cath Wheeler (cew52) or Men's Captain Stuart Walker (sddw2). See you there!

Support Queens' at Fairbairns!

Come down and watch Queens' in the biggest race of the term, Fairbairns. Details are here:

Volunteer in Thailand Next Summer

The Karen Hilltribes Trust is a small UK-based charity looking to send two teams of volunteers to hills of Northern Thailand next summer to install a clean water system.  The charity also sends a few volunteers to work in local schools.  While you are there you will live in alongside the Karen people in a remote hilltribe village, sharing in their culture and learning about their life.  This is an extremely rewarding experience that is both hard work and a lot of fun.

It is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in international development or doing engineering (although you do NOT have to be an engineer!) or for anyone who just wants do something interesting and rewarding with their summer.  The teams will go to Thailand in either July or August 2010, and the cost will be £500 to the charity, plus flights, insurance, visa etc.

If you are interested in the project please email Clara Thompson (clgt3@cam.ac.uk)

Prof David Colquhoun FRS

Science in an Age of Endarkenment

A SciSoc Talk

Tuesday, 1st Dec, at 8pm (entry 7:30pm) followed by a wine reception

We like to consider ourselves in an age of enlightenment where scientific curiosity is freed from dogmatism, fraud, and petty politics. But is this anywhere near the truth? Prof David Colquhoun FRS, author of the popular weblog "Improbable Science", comes to shed some light on the darker sides of present-day science.

Acupuncture and degrees in Chinese Herbal medicine or management speak are just a few on Professor Colquhoun's long list of problems with how science is being sidelined in the media and everyday life. From your newspaper to the NHS itself—how we can rid the world of bad science?

VENUE: Pharmacology Lecture Theatre, Tennis Court Road

ENTRY: 2£ (free for SciSoc members)
