QEnts - Ents in Exile

On Saturday 30th March, Queens' Ents presents:

***ENTS IN EXILE***

We're going underground.....

Determined not to be banished to the library, the Queens' Ents Committee are taking Queens' Ents underground. For the first time in the history of Queens' Ents, we'll be hosting a bop outside of College.

This Saturday, from 21:00 to 00:30, join us at the HIDDEN ROOMS, The Basement, 7a Jesus Lane.  See www.hiddenthing.com/8.html for a map.

There'll be FREE shots, FREE glowsticks and FREE sweets.  Make sure you buy yourself a ticket and arrive early so you can make the most of these offers! If you're angry/disappointed/annoyed by the lack of bops and other events within College, do something about it and head to the Hidden Rooms on Saturday for what is certain to be an amazing night, bringing Queens' people together....in exile!

Tickets will be on sale on WEDNESDAY 27th in buttery at lunch at dinner. There are only 300 tickets available so it is unlikely that there will be any available on the door on Saturday. If you are unable to make those times on Wednesday, please email jcr-ents@queens.cam.ac.uk to request a ticket. Non-Queens' students will also be advised to contact by email to buy tickets.

Newnham Loves Queens'

Newnham is hosting another 'Newnham Loves Queens' night this term. This Tuesday evening (26th) from 7.30pm Queens' students will get great drinks deals such as a double vodka mixer for £2 and 2 VKs for £2.50.

QCOEF - Caribbean Formal

Exciting news!  Queens' and Clare Overseas Education Fund are holding a Caribbean themed formal followed by live music at Clare on Tuesday February 2nd.

It'll be a great opportunity to experience formal at Clare, taste some Caribbean cooking and hear a steel band play in an exclusive performance at Clare Cellars.  You will also have the chance to find out more about QCOEF and the charities we have funded, and maybe make a donation...

We'll also be looking out for keen people to take over and form the new committee at Easter, as well as anyone who'd like to suggest a funding proposal.

If you'd like to come, please leave a cheque for £8.50 in Clara Thompson's pigeonhole, by Thursday 28th January.  Please make cheques payable to QCOEF and write your name and any dietry requirements on the back of the cheque.

Just a couple more things -  we'll be waiting in the bar from around 7 if anyone would like to come down and mingle pre-formal.  Otherwise arrive at 7.15 for formal starting at 7.30.  You can bring a bottle of wine between 2 people.

Hope to see lots of you there.....it's going to be awesome!

The QCOEF Committee x

QFilms - Waltz with Bashir

Fitzpat, Jan 31 2010 20:00 – 22:30

Wanna Be A Ski Trip Rep?

You would get to help us run the 2011 Ski Trip and then organise the 2012 Ski Trip as a Senior Rep.

Reasons to apply?

For more details and to apply to be on the committee please email Chris Hansford (ch485) and Jem MT (jm651) by Friday 29th January. We will then want to meet you for a short informal interview at some point, which we will organise later.

BATS Performances are Back!

ALL BATS Performances are going ahead! We were never included in the decanal ban as we, like Magsoc, do not require the Deans' permission to perform. We have a great set of 4 shows lined up for week 4 and 7 so do come along!

Meanwhile, the BATS' Mainshow in week 4, the eagerly anticipated new musical "The Final Countdown", sponsored by Big Fish, is looking for a bass guitar player and drummer to complete the pit band. If you're interested, email Raphael, the MD on rrr30 or contact him on 07921 181 583. Please let him know your year, course, past experience and standard. The show is conveniently at your very own Fitzpat theatre and the show dates are 9th - 13th February with rehearsals from 3rd Feb.

Even if you're not a bassist or drummer, we expect to see you at "The Final Countdown Baby" at Cindies on Tuesday - our launch night - with free "The Final Countdown" t-shirts for the early arrivals.

Triple Helix Presents the Panel Debate: Science: Is It Really 'Ours'?

1 Feb (Mon), 7.30pm Pharmacology Lecture Theatre, Tennis Court Road, see location map on tinyurl.com/rxaj7

FREE ENTRY

This panel event shifts the spotlight away from specific science controversies, and calls on us to examine the scientific discipline as a whole. How has the relationship between science and the public evolved to date? To what extent is the scientific profession obliged to engage with the public? How can it do so more effectively? What can the layman even contribute to science policy? More fundamentally, who owns science - the experts, the consumers, the media, the powers that be, the traditional lab rat, the hapless lay volunteer of a clinical study? Who knows?

Refreshments will be available after the talk and Q&A session.

Panel: Dr. James Wilsdon - Director of Science Policy Centre, The Royal Society. Professor Jim Secord - Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge. Ms Anna Lewcock - News Editor of Chemistry World

Triple Helix Presents The Panel Debate: GM Policy In Developing Regions: Yielding Much?

28 Jan (Thu), 7.30pm, McCrum Lecture Theatre, Bene't Street, behind The Eagle pub

FREE ENTRY

Is the jury still out on genetically-modified (GM) crops, even after all these years of scientific advancement and ethical debate? Does the recent economic crisis and increasing environmental damage justify a worldwide uptake of GM crops?

Some claim that corporate GM agriculture is 'more spin than substance', while others claim that even humanitarian GM projects are ultimately an attempt to generate profit from the global poor. But with scientific agreement on the fact that we face imminent worldwide food and water shortages, something must be done if we are to avert rising food prices, environmental degradation and social instability.

Why should the public support GM crops? Under what circumstances might they be acceptable? Does the public have another option? Find out more at this event.

Cambridge University Real Ale Society Pub Meet!

CURAS is the society for ale-lovers - basically we go to a different Cambridge pub each week and sample the ales on offer. What better way to spend an evening after a hard day of work?

CURAS will be meeting at the Red Bull on Barton Road from 8PM on Wednesday 27th. Its a pub that many students might not know, so what better opportunity to try it out?

New faces are always welcome!

St John's Film Society Presents: North by Northwest

On Thursday (28th) we have a classic from the Master himself, Alfred Hitchcock, as we take 'North by Northwest' out for a spin:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnQc3lO4JDs

One of the most celebrated thrillers of all time and providing the template for Bond films and Indiana Jones, this masterpiece sees advertising man Roger (Cary Grant) get tangled up in a conspiracy to smuggle out government secrets. This is a tale of mistaken identity, romance - with the help of Eve (Eva Marie Saint) - and big suspenseful set pieces that form some cinema classics.
