Inside Queens'

Queens' Access: CUSU Target Schools

Hey there all you Access-minded Queens' students!

Many of you will be just finishing your exams and have a week or so to kill before the May Ball, others may be in the midst of a long gap between exams and want to spend an hour or two doing something not related to revision. Some of you may just want something to occupy yourself with during the brief spells after exams that you are above the legal limit. If that is the case then why not immerse yourself in the wonderful world of the Access Target Schools Scheme and try and encourage more state education applications to Cambridge University!

Some of you may remember being talked to by a Cambridge student when you were in your final years of secondary school, and depending on how it went, it may have helped you make up your mind about applying or simply put any fears or doubts you had at rest. The Access-Schools program is aimed at getting all those people in state education who would not readily think about applying to Cambridge to give it a shot! You can easily get involved and it could help a lot of students get off the fence and apply.

To get involved in the target visits program simply go to www.cusu.cam.ac.uk and under the side heading "Prospective Students" click "For Target Volunteers" and log in using Raven. The target schools data base allows you, once signed up, to type in a post-code and obtain contact details for state schools in your area. Also, once you have selected a school you intend to visit (in no way a binding commitment), you can see any other Cambridge students who have expressed an interest in visiting that school and together you can get in contact and coordinate your visits if you so wish. On the "For Target Volunteers" webpage you can also find sample presentations, up to date information on University Fees and other financial stuff, tips and guidelines for preparing your talk, notes on the admissions process and much more.

I will be in my room (Y10) from 4-5pm on Tuesday and Wednesday the 2nd and 3rd June respectively if anyone who wants to get involved is having trouble with the online system - hopefully this won't be anyone as it is fairly simple to use. If anyone can't make those times and really wants help or would just like to know more, then drop me an email via the JCR website or at jcr-academic@queens.cam.ac.uk. You can even just nip round my room and chances are I'll be there coloring in or watching Futurama. I am Geographer after all....

I hope that all get involved!

The Quiz

Well done to Madeleine Hammond who answered last week's quiz correctly,  'Bistec de ternera con champinones, trufa y nat' in English translates as 'Beefsteak with mushrooms, truffles and cream'.

This week's question: How much time does the new green slip system allow a student to reserve a desk for in the library?

Apologies for a lack of photo this week, it seems Queens' students have been working hard and dedicating their time to revision instead of photography...hopefully we will have photos of post exam celebrations soon!
