Formal Hall

Formal Hall: Arrive by 7.30pm Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday

(Alternate Thursdays will be MCR Dinners commencing with the first Thursday of each term)

There will be no admittance to Hall Dinner after 7.30pm. This rule will be strictly applied. You are expected to arrive in good time to gain entry and have your wine opened. The Catering Staff will not be responsible for queues.

The number dining is limited to 90.

Gowns are worn to Hall Dinner.Formal Hall Dinner costs £8.50 Guests will pay a cover charge of £1.30 on the cost of each meal.

Booking

Booking for Formal Hall takes place online via the website www.upay.co.uk. The system will not accept bookings after 2.00pm the day before the Formal Hall.

Once logged in you select the function booking option from the menu on the left hand side of the screen. From the calendar that appears select the date of the Formal Hall you wish to attend and follow the on screen instructions.

You can book a maximum of 3 tickets, 1 for yourself and up to 2 guests. Anybody wishing to bring more than 2 guests to Formal Hall must seek approval from the Catering & Conference Manager.

There are 6 ticket options for booking into Formal Hall which are shown below:

  1. Standard Meal
  2. Vegetarian Meal
  3. Vegan Meal.
  4. Halal Meal
  5. Gluten Free Meal
  6. Other Diet – This ticket is for students and guests who require any diet other than those listed above.

Students or guests who require the other diet ticket should book on line as normal but need to email the catering department on catering.enquiries@queens.cam.ac.uk to inform them of their dietary requirements. Students must indicate when booking on the online booking system if their guests have any special dietary needs. The email needs to contain your name, the date you are attending Formal Hall and your dietary requirements for the meal and needs to be received at least 48 hours before the Formal Hall you are attending.

Payment and Tickets

Payment is made when you book the tickets on line and can be either by a debit or credit card or from your cashless account. Once the booking is confirmed you will see a confirmation page.

Refunds for Formal Hall tickets

In the first instance a request for a refund of a formal hall ticket should be made to the JCR/MCR Steward. The JCR/MCR Steward will decide whether to forward this request on.

If guests do not attend the dinner, the student to which they are attached will be charged. Please bear this in mind, as this rule will be strictly applied.

College Societies and Clubs:

College Societies and Clubs may book additional places for Formal Hall Dinner, which will increase the maximum number of diners from 90 to 150, providing they give at least 14 days notice in writing to the Catering Manager. For group bookings there is a surcharge of £2.15 per diner to cover the extra cost of preparation and service.

College Societies and Clubs are requested not to dine in Hall on Sundays.

Wine at Formal Hall:

Tutorial policy allows a maximum of one bottle of wine per Queens’ member (no spirits or fortified wine are permitted).

Guests are not permitted to bring their own wine or other alcohol.
